In this initial step, detailed inspections are used to gain understanding of the current condition of the subject. This may include:

  • Visual inspection and identification of condition phenomena.
  • In-situ digital mapping of condition and relevant technological findings.
  • Non-invasive microscopy.
  • Assessment of original and added materials.
  • Recommendations for further investigations and/or conservation treatment.

Condition Assessment

Documentation

Appropriate documentation of both an artwork's condition and the conservation process is a crucial aspect of any project. It is a tool that aids in monitoring types and rates of deterioration, and helps develop a more robust conservation strategy and treatment record. Documentation may include:

  • High resolution photography:  Detailed digital imaging in normal and raking incident light.
  • Photogrammetry:  High-resolution photographs seamlessly merged using state-of-the-art software to produce scaled, distortion-free images and/or 3D models of large paintings and/or objects.
  • Graphic documentation:  The mapping of condition, original technological features and/or added materials through graphic representation, to assess and monitor a decorated surface.
  • Written report:  Summary of methodology, findings and recommendations, illustrated with representative images.

diagnostic investigations

With an understanding of the current condition of the subject, further strategies and techniques are implemented to identify the causes of deterioration, and thereby determine a course to remediate them. This may include:

  • Physical history and materials research.
  • Sampling and analysis.
  • Environmental monitoring.
  • Multi-spectral investigations.

conservation treatment

Based on the findings from investigations, you will receive a tailor-made solution for preservation that is governed by the philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for the integrity and significance of the art and its context. Components include:

  • Project proposals:  Outlining the recommended treatments, timeframe and cost for conservation work.
  • Passive and preventive interventions.
  • Remedial treatments:  Utilizing high-quality, conservation-grade materials, that are reversible when possible or re-treatable, we provide a full range of treatments necessary to stabilize decoration at risk of loss, clean and improve the presentation of a work.
